Which boutique hotels in the Algarve are romantic?

Where is the Algarve, and what makes it worth visiting?
The Algarve is Portugal’s southernmost region, known for its beaches, cliffs, emerald sea, and whitewashed villages. Like many Portuguese families, we spent our childhood summers here and still do — now, one of us (Sofia) calls it home. The Algarve gets a rep for being touristy, but it’s a large region full of hidden gems. We’re always discovering new ones.
Recommendations for boutique hotels in the Algarve with a pool?
Most of the boutique hotels we feature in the Algarve have a pool. Praia do Canal Nature Retreat has a 50-metre infinity pool overlooking forest and ocean, Casa Mãe features a stunning triangular garden pool and a rooftop lap pool, and Companhia das Culturas offers two outdoor pools. Hospedaria and Pensão Agrícola each have small pools.
Can you recommend boutique hotels in the Algarve on the beach?
None of our featured hotels in the Algarve are beachfront, but in the Algarve you’re never too far from a beach. Casa Mãe in Lagos is within walking distance of Meia Praia, Hospedaria and Pensão Agrícola are near the quieter beaches of the east, and Praia do Canal Nature Retreat is surrounded by the wild west Atlantic coastline.
Are there rural or eco-friendly boutique hotels in the Algarve you recommend?
Yes, a few very special ones. Amaria and Muxima are eco-minded stays near Aljezur, Casas da Quinta de Cima and Companhia das Culturas are tranquil rural retreats in the east, and Praia do Canal Nature Retreat is built with natural materials and a deep respect for the surrounding landscape.

Small pets are welcome on request at Casas da Quinta de Cima and Monte da Vilarinha.
Where’s best for surfing in the Algarve?
For the best surfing in the Algarve, head west to Costa Vicentina, where dramatic cliffs meet surf beaches. Towns like Sagres, Aljezur and Carrapateira make great bases — explore our Boutique Hotels and Insider Guide to Costa Vicentina for our favourite stays and things to see and do in the area.
When is the best time to visit the Algarve?
The best time to visit the Algarve is during spring to early summer or fall when the weather is warm, and the crowds are smaller. Summer in the Algarve is hot; July and August are very busy. Winters are perfect for golfers and sun-seekers looking to escape cold temperatures, although many places close in low season.
How do you choose the boutique hotels you feature in the Algarve?
We handpick every place ourselves — beautiful design, thoughtful service, and good energy come first. We’ve visited most of the boutique hotels in the Algarve that we feature on JO&SO; the rest are at the very top of our Watchlist. We’re JO&SO, Joana and Sofia, two Portuguese sisters on the hunt for the best places to stay in Portugal.
Do I need a car in the Algarve?
The easiest way to get around the Algarve is by car, as many attractions are spread out. A train runs along the coast, but it’s slow and limited. Local buses connect some of the major towns. Ride-hailing apps (i.e. Uber, Bolt, etc.) are widely available.
